Where future filmmakers are encouraged to be curious, creative, and collaborative.

Loved by both Campers & Coaches.
Seriously! But don’t take our word for it; here are some things people have to say about us.
This film camp was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. It taught me how to tell stories through film and showed me the power of creativity and collaboration. This experience sparked my love for film and is one of the main reasons I chose to pursue it in college!
— Jaela, 2-year camper
“
BHAM Film Camp has been a transformative experience not only for the participants but for the volunteers as well. I’ve learned just as much from the students as I have from the coaches. It’s where I got my start in filmmaking, providing both the practical skills and real connections needed to grow, and it is clear programs like this deserve a lasting presence in our film community.
— DeSean, 4-year volunteer
“
BHAM Film Camp is an incredible experience for students to get hands-on training with so many talented creatives and industry pros from Birmingham and around the country. The amount of leadership and skills growth over 5 days is astounding. Film camp doesn't just teach film; it gives students the gift of developing their creative voice.

Here’s what Film Camp is all about!
-
Film camp is for high school students (ages 14-18, from rising freshmen to graduated seniors) who are interested in learning about video, photography, cameras, storytelling, and/or editing… or who just want to try something new! Film Camp is capped at 20 students so that we can give quality attention and one-on-one coaching to everyone.
-
BHAM Film Camp is Monday, June 8 through Friday, June 12 from 9:00-4:00pm every day. On Saturday, June 13th, we will host a Film Camp Film Festival to premiere the students’ work in front of an audience of friends and family. Save the date and invite your people!

Campers will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking, including story development, camera operation, lighting, sound, and editing. Along the way, they will build collaboration skills, grow their creative confidence, and learn how to take an idea from concept to finished film—working as a team with guidance from professional filmmakers.

Camp runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is all about making, trying, and creating together. In a typical day, we kick things off with fun warm-up games, then jump into hands-on workshops in lighting, filming, sound, and editing taught by local filmmakers. The rest of the day is spent working in small groups to plan, film, and bring to life a short film completely led by the campers. We wrap up by reviewing the day’s footage and regrouping to share wins, lessons, and laughs before heading home. (If it’s Wednesday, then we do all of this wearing fun patterned shirts for Wacky Shirt Wednesday!)
-
Nope! All camera equipment, editing gear, and software are provided. Campers just need to show up ready to learn, collaborate, and create.
-
BHAM Film Camp is offered on a sliding scale so that every student who is interested can attend, regardless of financial circumstances. We believe creative opportunities should be accessible, and we work to remove barriers that might prevent young people from exploring filmmaking.
At the same time, we also believe that people tend to value the experiences they invest in. For that reason, we ask every camper to contribute something toward the cost of camp.
Tuition ranges from a minimum of $50 up to the full cost of $300. The full price helps cover five meals, daily snacks, a Film Camp t-shirt, filmmaking supplies, and tickets to the final film premiere. All will be provided for every student.
All mentorship from professional filmmakers, camera gear, and filmmaking education are provided at no cost, thanks to the support of our local volunteers, sponsors, and partners.
-
You can apply for a scholarship directly through the application. Just let us know what support you need—we want Film Camp to be accessible to as many students as possible.
-
Because Bham Film Camp is a not-for-profit program run under the fiscal sponsorship of Fractured Atlas, the registration fee is technically a donation to the non-profit. Registration fees help cover the real costs of running Bham Film Camp, including meals and snacks for campers, professional filmmaking equipment and software, and space and production expenses. They support our mission and allow us to continue offering this program to students in our community.
-
Yes! We provide one lunch each day, snacks, drinks. Campers just need to bring a refillable water bottle each day.
